9 Lives

This is Frankie.  He is one on my cats here at Bad Cat Portraits.  Frankie loves having his picture taken.  I think he knows what's going on when I take out the camera to get a picture of him.  He will sit there all nice and handsome.  Here he is in another cat portrait of him.  It's called 9 Lives.  Yes, that's a cat skull on Frankie's head. I have always enjoyed drawing skulls and so I thought of drawing a cat skull.   This is what I came up with, enjoy!

Desmond. The toughest cat in Philly!

Here sits Desmond, the toughest cat in Philly.  That's right! This all black alley cat that I have named Desmond lives in my neighborhood.  I see him almost everyday.

For 2 years now, I've helped this cat along.  I'm not sure he always understands this though, as he will swat at me with those razor sharp claws when I feed him.  He can be quit ornery. He will let me pet him, but only for a moment.  Desmond warns me often with his growls that he wants to be left alone.  Desmond would rather just hang out and watch the scene.

This black cat has come home many times from a battle taken on the streets of Philly.  Usually, there are scratches on this face, sometimes more serious.  Recently, Desmond took on a serious injury on his right side of his head.  It is not something nice to look at and didn't want to show it,  for sure a head turner.  It looked like a bigger animal for sure got in a brawl with him.  But, Desmond keeps on coming back and knows how to keep himself cleaned up.

Desmond still runs his hood.

It's Dexter! Straight outta Burlington Vermont!

Here is Dexter to finalize the whole pet family.  Along with Dexter's pet portrait, there is Minnow and Goose to make the pet family.

Dexter has seen many days, as he has been across country from coast to coast to coast, living the sweet cat life.  Showing his age, he has lost sight in one of his eyes.  A few pets have come and also left, yet Dexter stays true.  He is one of largest, fluffiest, and thickest cats i've had the pleasure to hang with.  Dexter rocks!

The Desmond files: chillin'

Laying in the sun and feeling the warm breeze, Desmond is loving it.  I sit back and knock back a few cold ones.  He makes good company watching the dogs and their walkers go by.  Desmond is a good listener, too.  We sit back and conversate over what's up and how the day is, the usual. Can't say i understand what Desmond says back to me, but I'm here for the cat.  That's what counts!

Desmond's music choice today is the Pixies. The song, "where is my mind."

The Desmond files: to kill is to love.

I open the door to see what Desmond is up to.  What do I see in front of the door?  A pile of bones.  Looks like the remains of a small rodent.  Thank you so much Desmond.  I brush the bones aside.  Nothing like the show of love than the kill from last night nicely placed in front of the door.

Desmond is always happy to see me come out to say hi to him.  What's that mark on your neck?  Teeth marks and fur missing.  Scrapping it up again with the local cats again, looks like.  Just another night in the hood for Desmond.  If there were sound bites, right now you would be hearing loud meows.

Back into the shelter Desmond goes to clean himself.  He's got to get his sleep in for the late night run around in the hood.  Desmond's theme song for the day is "damn it feels good to be a gangster", The Geto Boys. Yeah, he keeps it on the real.

Garfield (not the lasagna eating orange cat)

This is Garfield.  He was my girlfriend's cat not long ago.  Unfortunately, Garfield began having territorial issues with Chauncey that became worst every day.  Chauncey is the the other cat living in the house.  Garfield was behaving very bad and it was decided he needed a new home.  We didn't want to see him go, but it was best for both cats.  He did find another loving home where he rules his land. Yay!  I wonder what that cat is up to now?

Garfield was a cool cat and so here is his pet portrait to always remember him by.

"the octopus"

Here is "the octopus."  This is a high quality digital pigment print (giclee).  I started drawing this character a few years ago and it has evolved to this.  The octopus is always in some kind of slick business wear, always looking dapper.  Ride bikes, the octopus is all about it. Chill out with a beer, the octopus is there.  The octopus is all about looking hip and keeping it real.

"The octopus" print is yours for $20.00.  You can buy the print in my Pencilhead store.  Click here!

The Desmond files...Spring is almost here!

The rain has stopped and the sun is out!  Desmond comes out of his shelter from his mid afternoon nap for a drink.  His ear is on the mend and his injured leg is almost 100% better. Winter takes a beating but Desmond keeps on keeping on.

After getting his hydration on, Desmond is off to sit in the warm sun and see what is going on in the back yard.  Time to sit at the corner to watch people come and go, see what new cats are coming in his territory, maybe even go out for a stroll.  Wait, not sure if he's got enough time for all that, still needs a cat nap for the evening run around...

...Yep, definitely time for another cat nap.

The Desmond files...Desmond runs this show!

The sun is shining.  Still cold out there though, temperature around the freezing mark.  Desmond is taking in the sun while keeping look out of his back yard.   This is his spot.  Eat. Clean self off.   Take watch.  Take a stroll in the hood.  Will be back later...

Desmond came home a few days ago with a mangled ear.  Hard to say what he got into this time.  His ear was healing up, but he just keeps rubbing it raw.  I try to clean it out for him.  Sometimes he is cool with me doing that. Last time I tried, he put up a fuss and went in his shelter.  Definitely had the "don't touch me" face on that last time.  I'll try again later.

A few nights ago, I was woken up around 2 am hearing growling.  Immediately, I thought it was Chauncey growling at Frankie.  Nope, both cats were sleeping in bed.  I jumped out of bed to look out the window and saw a cat.  A cat I have yet seen around here.  This cat was right outside my door where Desmond's shelter is.  A cat challenging Desmond, what the what?  Clearly this cat doesn't know of Desmond.  Desmond must not have felt to threatened, he just stayed in his shelter while this other cat growled up a storm.  Or, it was just too damn cold out to move from a warm spot.   I opened the door, unknown cat ran off.  I was done with hearing cats growling at 2 in the morning.  Just another cat trying to move in Desmond's territory.   This has happened before.  Still, with an injured leg slowly getting better, Desmond runs the show.  I swear, Desmond is like a ninja out there in the back yard.  I've seen him slither through the grass and disappear in the shadows while stalking another cat.  He is one smooth cat and will also let it be known that he is the champion alley cat.    Hey, I've seen neighbors walk their dogs by.  Their dogs do a double take at Desmond with a face of "oh snap, not that cat!"

Oh yeah, Desmond loves to rub up against my leg looking for attention.   He let's his guard down occasionally.

Billy the cat

It's winter.  I was thinking of all the cats out there that endure these cold winter months while drawing this cat portrait.   One thing I never leave the house with is one of my many winter hats.  So, I put a winter hat on this guy.   Custom made for his ears.  Also, I added a patch to keep it a little weird. I'm a fan of psychedelic comic book art and that art genera.

Unfortunately, I sadly have to say that Billy past away last year.

The Desmond files...continued

The snow is falling and it's cold out there.  This cat, Desmond, seems to just take it all.  He is definitely the toughest cat I've met with a big heart.  Here he is in January snow with temperatures in the teens coming out to say hi to me.

Recently, Desmond came home limping.  Holding his left leg close to his body, he trotted over to me.  He meowed and rubbed up against me as always.   I immediately picked him up to check him out.  Underneath his front leg I saw what looked liked teeth marks as if he got in a fight with a dog.  "What did you get into now?" I thought to myself.   Dang cat!

Cold out and hobbling, Desmond still is in happy spirits.   It's been a little over a week with his injury and he is now starting to be able to use his front left leg.   When he isn't in his little home I built, he will see me walking out to the trash and come walking up to me with his loud meows.  Sometimes Desmond is out for a long time.  My girlfriend and I say he's busy doing stuff.  He always makes it back  for dinner though.

Frankie's pet portrait!

It's Frankie with "street cats" badge on his collar.  Frankie is a British short hair cat.  He is the most lovable cat with a big head.  It's been said that the Cheshire cat features were taken from the British short hair cat.  Pretty cool!
Frankie
14" x 17"

Frankie lived on the streets of Philly for about a year.  So, he is representing in the portrait.  He has adjusted very well to being a house cat and loves it.  Frankie likes to liven things up around here too!   Chauncey, the other cat, is not always amused with him.

Hope you like the cat portrait!  Inquire about getting your pet portait drawn. Do it!          Do it.

Philly "street cats" club

I've decided to start a page dedicated to the Philly street cats I draw.  It started with trying to sketch out a cool collar for my next cat portrait of Frankie.  This came about...

I dig it.  Needs some more work...
